Fall Movies- Scream

By: Alex Casalaspro and Nathaniel Toto

With the month of October comes one of the greatest holidays for kids and teens alike,

Halloween. Halloween provides tricks, treats and most importantly the horror genre. During the 1990s the slasher genre was fading, it was getting predictable and boring. This meant that no companies or studios would produce these movies, and even if they did they barely ever did well. People were tired of the clichés. Fortunately, Scream came at just the right time. This movie directed by Wes Craven revitalized horror movies. It took all of those clichés, dumb teenage friends being hunted by a killer, popular jocks and teenage parties, and instead made them exciting. With Halloween coming, the best time to revisit this classic horror series is now, so the following is a rating of each Scream movie from worst to best (in our opinions, along with some spoilers ahead.)

5. Scream 3-

When thinking of the Scream movies, Scream 3 is typically regarded as not very memorable compared to the others. Although it ended the trilogy, Scream 3 lost some of the original terrifying factors that viewers loved in its predecessors. The movie ditched some of its fear factors to become more funny. In our opinion, the movie is placed last because it shifts its genre more towards a movie of comedy than providing exciting thrills and scares. The new characters didn’t provide an interesting enough storyline, so much so that they are killed off rather quickly. When ghostface reveals himself at the end, as Sidney’s illegitimate half brother, the plot point seems almost rushed and doesn’t make much sense.

4. Scream 2-

The second installment of the Scream franchise, Scream 2 continues the slasher theme. This film was a good sequel to the first, but does not rank high enough to be considered the best. Mickey’s reveal as the killer, almost makes no sense as he disappears halfway through the movie. The need for two killers makes no sense in this sequel. But a redeeming factor of this movie is the blindside of “Debby’s” reveal as Billy Loomis’ mom. This factor places it in fourth place for us.

3. Scream 4-

Scream 4 was an unexpected continuation of the Scream Trilogy. This addition to the franchise provides a well known “cliché” of two Scream killers, but instead has a slight twist. In this movie when the killer is revealed it is actually surprising. This is due to the fact that she (the killer) “genuinely” seemed scared of ghostface. Her relation to Sidney as her cousin and her desire for fame makes her seem like a very real psychopath, providing a more horror feel then some other Screams.

2. Scream 5-

While Scream 5 is the newest installment, it definitely blew our expectations out of the water.

The most recent Scream provided us with even more scares and is one of the most terrifying and frightening of the franchise. The plot twist of a previous ghostfaces relation to main character Sam makes it seem like she’ll be ghostface. Ghostface’s true reveal is shocking, captivating, and interesting making it an amazing addition to the franchise.

1. Scream-

Scream was truly the best in the franchise. In this case nothing can top the original. Scream truly changed the horror genre, and kept the interest of horror fans in a time when it was fading. The movie had audiences captivated right from the opening scene. It had us all on the edge of our seats. The movie truly established horror with the plot twist seen at the end of the film, and we could have never imagined there would be two ghostfaces. Scream truly revolutionized the slasher genre, and it shows in our rating.

Although Scream revolutionized the horror genre, there are many horror movies currently

coming out to theaters this month. Another classic horror movie franchise is sadly coming to an end, Halloween with Halloween Ends. The Halloween franchise has been going on for 44 years. Another film you should go see this month is Smile. Smile is a new psychological horror movie that you should definitely watch if you’re up for it.
