Artist of the Month: Senior Photographer Shania McCombs

By: Jamie Moncy

The September artist of the month is Shania McCombs, a senior at HFC, who is exceptionally gifted in photography. During her time in HFC, she started her journey as a photographer and has since taken 5 art classes, in pursuit of her great passion for the arts. Her work primarily consists of various styles and genres, including portrait photography, abstract photography, black-and-white photography, as well as landscape photography. As an HFC student, Shania has already done incredible things for HFC, such as being one of the lead photographers for the homecoming parade, Pep Rally, senior events, and spirit week. In addition, Shania is recognized as a Newsday Merit Awards winner and is currently the artist of the month. These incredible achievements showcase her incredible work ethic and skill for creating and developing art.

Shania's journey of becoming a photographer was inspired by her dad, who is also a fellow photographer. She was also inspired by the works of photographers such as Vivian Maier, Dorothea Lange, and Carrie Mae Weems to begin her photography journey, at the beginning of seventh grade, at HFC. In the last few years, she has learned so much about photography through her photography club advisor and the classes that assist her in advancing her abilities and understanding of photography.

As a photographer, she hopes for people to see her artwork and evoke emotions of all kinds. She believes that the most rewarding part of photography is the thrill of doing different projects and exploring different things. Shania believes art truly changed her life. In the words of Shania, “Art impacted my life because photography gave me a purpose, and I’m truly grateful for it". Furthermore, she advises people who newly started their photography journey, to further enhance and hone her skills. Shania is truly an artist to commemorate for her wonderful achievements that will inspire many for years to come.
