Meet Principal Alaimo, a passionate and committed individual who brings great experiences and a unique perspective to her role as H. Frank Carey's new Principal! As we delve into the story of Principal Alaimo, she shares not only her professional journey but also the personal moments that have shaped her.
Introduce yourself! How would you like others to know you?
"My name is Jennifer Alaimo. I have two children, a son in 9th grade and a daughter in 7th grade."
Tell us about your past experience as an educator and/or school administrator! Where have you previously worked and how did you get to where you are today?
"I started my career 20 years ago at Sewanhaka High School. I was a Special Education teacher, Peer Helper Advisor, Cheerleading Coach, Softball Coach, and Colorguard Advisor. Then I continued my career at Floral Park Memorial High School as a Special Education Chairperson and then Assistant Principal. Now I am a proud Principal of H. Frank Carey High School!"
What do you enjoy doing in your free time outside of work? Any hobbies or interests you'd like to share?
"Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family. I watch my son play ice hockey and my daughter play volleyball. I also enjoy reading, riding my bike and listening to music."
What is a quote that inspires you?
"Greatest glory consists of not in never falling but rising every time we fall."
Who is someone in your life that has strongly influenced the way you view the world?
"My mother was my inspiration. She lost her battle with cancer at a young age, but her will to fight and positive attitude stays with me every single day. She loved her family fiercely and taught me the value of hard work."
In moments of stress or challenges, how do you typically unwind or find balance?
"To unwind, I will spend time with my children- or I will listen to music and ride my bike."
What's something about you that you think others might be surprised to learn?
"What may be surprising is that my whole plan in life was to be an elementary school teacher."
Can you tell us about a memorable anecdote from your time as an educator that made an impact on you?
"I went to Valley Stream North and had a wonderful experience. I was a softball player and a cheerleader. I took a child development class where babies from the neighborhood were brought to school and we, students, would create activities and Work with the children."
What is your favorite memory from your own school days, and how has it influenced your perspective on education?
"My class, Peer Helpers, participated in the CW Post Speak Out every year. At this event students would come up with skits about real world teen issues and have a panel of experts to ask questions."
What is the hardest part about being a principal and how do you overcome the challenges?
"The hardest part of being a principal is being everywhere! LOL!"
How would you describe your leadership style?
"I would describe myself as approachable, kind, and fair. I keep an open door policy. But most importantly - I would describe myself as hopeful."
What is a message that you would like to tell the students of Carey?
"Follow your dreams and let them be your motivation to succeed. Have hope in your future and remember every challenge is an opportunity to become stronger."
