Sophomore Sports Night

By Natalie Osorio

The Class of 2025 had an incredible time in the gym on March 15, 2023. The night had been planned for months by the student government and the class advisors. The Orange and Black teams arrived ready for the night ahead. The Cafeteria was buzzing with countless students laughing with their friends, applying eye black, braiding their hair, and taking pictures. Right before the events began, each team ran inside the gym with their flag as family and friends cheered them on. The night began with the snake race as both teams claimed their territory on one side of the gym. The girls began, each commencing with a solo sprint, then locking arms with their teammates to take the challenge on. One, then two, then five, the line never stopped increasing. Finally, the orange team’s girls ran to victory in the first challenge! The boys were next, and the black team was determined for a win. The teams strategically chose the fastest individual to start the race. Avoiding tripping from the slippery floors, the guys focused to race as fast as possible. The stands became aggressive, chanting to see who would race to victory. Finally, the crowd held its breath as the orange team finished first. Next came the balloon race and the girls and boys lined up prepared to score. One by one, they ran holding on to their balloon, and attempted to pop it as quickly as possible. The students dropped down, pressing all their weight to pop the balloons. It was not as painful as you may think! The Scooter race was a blast for all those involved. One boy and one girl were paired up for this challenge. To start off, the guys sprinted across the gym, attempting to push the scooter without knocking their teammate over. The girls then followed and attempted to push their teammate on the scooter as fast as they possibly could. The pipeline challenge required extreme focus, fast reaction times, and incredible teamwork. The selected students lined up and focused on keeping the ball in the tubes. As soon as it passed through, they ran carefully to the other side, prepared to receive it from their teammates. The crowd cheered as we watched the students carefully and swiftly race across the gym. The orange team won this challenge. “Get dressed” was one of the most aggressive yet hilarious challenges seen that evening. Black sweatpants with a black shirt were provided for the black team and gray sweatpants with an orange shirt for the orange team. The girls lined up their shoes on the other side of the gym and took a nervous breath before starting their race. The event started with teammates aggressively dressing their fellow teammates. As they ran across the gym desperately holding on to their new sweatpants, the other teammates stood ready for action. As soon as the individual returned to the start, everyone huddled around them to quickly remove the shared outfit. The crowd laughed as we watched the aggressiveness shared amongst the teammates. Lastly, the night finished with Tug of War, the challenge awaited for the most. The girls lined up and strategically placed each teammate to balance the strength. As the girls tugged, their faces showed the determination yet struggle of the activity. The orange team’s girls began to shift towards the line, and they tried their hardest to avoid the marker of failure. The black team, using all their might, pushed the orange team through the line, and were victorious in the challenge! The boys were committed to winning the final challenge. Right before it began, they looked around the gym, jumping up and shouting to make the crowd cheer wildly. They walked up to the rope, grabbed it, and pulled with all their might. The challenge lasted about one minute, and included intensity, determination, and incredible stamina. Finally, the orange team passed the line marker, and the black team was crowned the winner of the challenge. Sophomore Sports Night was an incredible experience. This unique evening was the birth of priceless memories and friendships. The score was extremely close; the orange team finished with 100 points, while the black team lost by three points. Although this caused some disappointment, everyone left with a smile on their face from the memorable night.
