Today was the pink-out game between the Carey Seahawks varsity football team (4-1) and Sewanhaka’s varsity football team (0-4). So what is the pink-out game, anyway?
Every year, the Seahawks varsity team holds a pink-out game planned by the Think Pink club. The purpose of the game is to bring attention to breast cancer awareness. As Mr. Stanley said in an interview before the game (you can find it on the Clipper homepage), “I think that we can use our game to bring people together for such an important cause, so I think that’s really the highlight of it when we can generate the crowd and everybody thinking about a really important cause.” Everybody is urged to wear pink at the game and show support for breast cancer awareness.
This is a very important game for the Seahawks. According to Mr. Stanley, “I think that (the Seahawks will) bounce back strong today.” Last week, they lost 30-6 to the 5-0 Garden City Trojans. When asked how the Seahawks are preparing for this cross-district game, he said they “don’t put any more or less emphasis on a game; they just go out there and work.”
The game started off with Sewanhaka receiving the ball, but shortly ended with defensive lineman Jack Tierney picking up a fumble, giving the Seahawks the ball. Then, RB Will Tolliver took a handoff for a touchdown to get onto the board for the Seahawks, making the score 7-0. Then, on the next drive, the Seahawks Defense forced Sewanhaka to punt, which would be blocked by DB Christian Todaro and picked up by LB Justin DePietro for a touchdown to put them up 14-0 in the first quarter. In Sewanhaka’s next drive, Sewanhaka would finally score from an 84-yard receiving touchdown to put them on the board 14-7. When the Seahawks got the ball back, after many handoffs, running back Ben Rose would get into the end zone to make the score 21-7 Seahawks at the end of the quarter.
At the start of the quarter, Sewanhaka would have the ball, but turn it over to the Seahawks. Then, running back William Toliver would get into the end zone with a rushing touchdown, his second of the day to extend the Seahawks lead to 28-7. On their next drive, wide receiver Michael Vederosa would score to tack on to their lead, making the score 35-7 Seahawks. When Sewanhaka took the field on offense again, they were forced to punt, only for it to be blocked. But the first play of the drive for the Seahawks turned into an interception by Sewanhaka. That drive would turn into a forced fumble, but the half would end with the Seahawks leading 35-7.
At halftime, the wonderful Carey band and Pirettes would put on a show. The Carey Dad’s Club would not disappoint either, as they made wonderful sandwiches, lemonades, and other food and drinks.
To start the 3rd quarter, wide receiver TJ Wakely would score off of a kick return to increase Carey’s lead to 42-7. On their next drive, the Seahawks would score yet again off of a rushing touchdown by Joncarlo Carbone to make the score 49-7. The 4th quarter had no scoring, and the Seahawks would come out on top 49-7 over Sewanhaka in the pink-out game. After the game, I was able to interview running back Will Toliver, who scored two touchdowns against Sewanhaka, which you can find on the website. Next week, the Seahawks host the Mepham Pirates at Marc Mantone field, hoping to take that motivation from today’s win and carry it over to next week against the Pirates.
