Mr. Stanley is the great head coach of the varsity Seahawks’ football team. In 2013 he won the Lou Rettino High School Football Coach of the Year award for New York, an award for the best high school coach in New York, presented by the New York Giants. He won the award after going 12-0 in 2013 and winning the Long Island Class 2 football championship. As you may know, today is the annual Pink-Out Game for breast cancer awareness, facing Sewanhaka, and I got to ask him a few questions ahead of the game against Sewanhaka, so this is what he said:
The first thing I said was “Every year there’s a pink-out game, and you’ve had the honor of being able to coach in these games. What would you say is the highlight of these games?” He responded with “I think that we can use our game to bring people together for such an important cause, so I think that’s really the highlight of it when we can generate the crowd and everybody thinking about a really important cause.”
I asked how this Seahawks team was looking to perform today. He said that “I think it’s a good matchup for us. I think it’s a bounce back week for us. We got off to a really good start and we hit a little speed bump with Garden City but I think that we’ll bounce back strong today.”
I also asked about the mindset coming off of that game, to which he responded with “I think it’s to just move and learn for it, and just to continue to get better and hopefully if we do that we can get a good opportunity to win when we play them, but we’re just going to learn from our mistakes from last week and just move forward and try to get better.”
Although Sewanhaka is 0-4, when I asked him about his main concerns about them, he responded with “They have some good team speed so we just have to make sure that we’re disciplined with our alignments and our assignments, but if we do that we’re ok.”
Finally, I asked, because this is a cross-district rival and they have a lot of these cross-district games on the schedule, how the Seahawks prepare for these types of games, to which he said “Same way we prepare for any opponent. We don’t put any more or less emphasis on a district game or any game like that, we just get to work the same way we do each week.”
The 4-1 Carey Seahawks Varsity football team is hosting the 0-4 Sewanhaka varsity football game today at 3:30 for the annual pink-out game in alliance with the Think Pink club for breast cancer awareness month. Make sure to come on over to Marc Mantone Field for the once a school year event and support the Seahawks!
Mr. Stanley, Head Coach of Varsity Seahawks Football
