2023 Wrapped


From advancements in technology to the craziest trends on TikTok, this year was surely a wild ride. As we stand on the brink of new year, let us revisit some of the moments that made 2023 an unforgettable year.


1. Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour - Set a record for being the highest grossing concert tour and the first one to surpass $1 billion dollars. There was also a concert film that premiered on October 13th, 2023.


2. 2023 Writers Guild of America strike - Started on May 2 and ended on September 27. The strike was a result of disagreements over pay, the size of writing staff in shows and the use of AI in writing scripts.


3. Barbenheimer - Comes from the portmanteau of the movies Barbie and Oppenheimer. Premiered during the summer in July, it is one of the most hyped up double features to date.


4. Turkey-Syria Earthquakes - A magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit Turkey near the northern border of Syria, leaving millions of people devastated.


5. OceanGate Submarine - In June, an OceanGate submersible went missing during a tourist expedition and the rescue operation which lasted days made headlines. A few days later, it was concluded that the submarine imploded under the water pressure.


6. The Rise of AI - Artificial intelligence has reached a significant rise in popularity and advancement this year with the increase of applications in different fields such as generating images, software and robotic development. OpenAI also released GPT-4, a language model for ChatGPT, on March 14th which made it more powerful than ever.


7. 2023 Israel–Hamas war - The armed conflict between Israel and the militant group Hamas began on October 7th and is taking place on the Gaza strip.


8. Rihanna’s Super Bowl - Rihanna performed for this year’s Super Bowl halftime show. During her performance, she announced her second child with her boyfriend A$AP Rocky.


9. X (formerly Twitter) - In July 2023, Elon Musk started rebranding the social platform Twitter to “X” and bid farewell to the bird icon and changed it to an “X” icon in both the web and app versions.


10. King Charles III’s coronation - This coronation will be the United Kingdom’s first coronation in 70 years. He was crowned on May 6th, 2023 at Westminster Abbey.


11. GTA VI Trailer - Rockstar Games has finally dropped the trailer for the one of the most anticipated games of the decade on December 5th. The trailer has gained over 100 million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours.


12. Grimace Milkshake - The Grimace milkshake from McDonald’s started one of wildest TikTok trends during the summer. After drinking the milkshake, people would appear as if they passed out and be covered in the purple beverage.


13. Celebrity Couples - We have gained a couple of interesting celebrity couples this year. Here are some to name a few: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater, Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet, and Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny.


14. Instagram’s Threads - An app that was supposed to rival Twitter at the time. It was fun while it lasted for a day.


15. Super Bowl LVII - The American Football Conference champion Kansas City Chiefs defeated the National Football Conference champion Philadelphia Eagles with a score of 38-35.


16. Donald Trump’s Mugshot - He was arrested in August on charges that he tried to steal the 2020 presidential elections. The image of his mugshot had spread like wildfire online with netizens making numerous edits.


17. 2023 NBA Finals - The Nuggets defeated the Heat in four of five games, winning their first championship in franchise history after 47 seasons in the NBA.


18. The Super Mario Bros. Movie - The movie based on the classic game is one of the year’s biggest hits and had a box office of $1.36 billion dollars worldwide.


19. India takes #1 Spot - In 2023, India overtook China as the country with the largest population in the world, with more than 1.43 billion people.


20. The Last Of Us - The show premiered on January 15, 2023 on HBO. It is based on the game “The Last Of Us” with the show starring Bella Ramsey as Ellie and Pedro Pascal as Joel
